Chapter 22: The Terms
He came up the back stairs behind me with his hand on the banister and not on me.
The studio was empty.
Gwen had left a sticky note on the laptop: *Night shift. Do not do it on the clean drawings.*
I pulled the note off and put it in my pocket.
The light outside had gone amber.
The clip lamp on the drafting table lit one bright circle on the wood.
Under us the washers rolled, a slow warm thunder through the floorboards.
I locked the door at the top of the stairs.
Then I turned around and put my back against it.
Elliot stood in the middle of the room in his navy coat with his hands open at his sides.
He waited.
"I have terms," I said.
"I thought you might."
"One. Nothing is a secret from me again. Not the small things you think are too small."
"Agreed."
"Two. We never sign for each other."
"Anything with both our names on it gets a third signature."
"It's Judith's, because she scares us both."
His mouth twitched.
"Agreed."
"Three. When I'm angry, I say so to your face, with the door shut."
"You don't get to be the only one who's honest."
"Agreed."
"Four."
My voice caught.
I made it steady.
"Four. I picked you once without knowing a thing about you. I'm picking you again, and I know all of it."
"I'm choosing the whole man."
He didn't move.
His eyes had gone very bright, and his throat worked once.
"Say yes," I said.
"Yes."
"Say it like the first time."
"Felicity," Elliot said, hoarse. "Yes. Please."
