Chapter 23: After the Storm
"Sect Master," said Zhiyi, horrified. "Get up. You'll hurt your knees."
"My knees can bear it," said Qi Wanli, and did not get up.
Behind him, one by one, a thousand disciples knelt on the stones.
The sound ran down the whole slope.
Zhiyi stood there in a burned robe, with leaves in her hair, and wanted to crawl into the nearest pot.
"I sent a stranger up that mountain to die for us," said the Sect Master.
"I called it an assignment. I will never use that word again."
"You sent me to a man who needed a pill," said Zhiyi. "It wasn't a bad assignment."
Juehan laid a hand on the old man's arm and lifted him, very gently, to his feet.
"The sect will need a war god," said Qi Wanli, wiping his eyes.
"The Heavens have taken their nine. The beasts are yours again, if you wish them."
"I do not."
