Chapter 13: Eleven Days
By seven the couch was empty and the blanket lay folded square, with the pillow set on top of it.
Wanning stood in the sitting room in yesterday's cardigan and looked at the empty couch.
Captain Ji had gone to drill without a sound.
She was glad. She told herself so twice.
Then the green door opened without a knock, because Ji Suwen had a key and used it.
"Congee," Ji Suwen announced, and set a covered pot on the counter. "Luo, bring the pickles. Luo, the pickles."
Luo came in behind her with a jar in each hand and a look of deep innocence.
"Good morning, Miss Qiao. Good morning, miss. I did not hear anything last night."
"There was nothing to hear," Wanning said.
"Nothing at all, miss. That is what I told the neighbours."
Ji Suwen was looking at the couch, at the folded blanket and the square pillow.
"My son makes his bed square," she said. "Even when it is a couch."
She said nothing more. She ladled congee into three bowls, and put the first one in front of Wanning with both hands.
"Eat. You read the email?"
"I read it."
"Then you're angry, and angry people forget to eat." She sat down across from her. "Show me the corner of the cloth tonight. The petal."
"I can't stitch it, Auntie."
"Can't, or won't?"
"My grandmother said it would be finished when I was."
Ji Suwen put down her spoon.
"She left that petal for you to finish, not for the wall to look at," she said. "A person who sews a thing for four winters wants it finished by the right hand, whenever that hand is ready."
