Chapter 14: Sabine Turns

Sabine Crane came to my yard at noon, alone, in dove-grey silk with ash on the hem.

I was sitting on the tailgate of my last wagon, eating bread with a burned arm.

Finola saw her first and picked up a shovel.

"Put it down," I said. "She's got nobody with her."

"That's what worries me."

Sabine stopped ten feet from the wagon.

Her golden hair was coming out of its tight coil, and her blue eyes were red at the rims.

"I came to say something," she said. "Then you may hit me, if you like."

"I don't hit people," I said. "I stab them."

She flinched.

Across the yard, where Aldric stood with Orrin over a map of the capital streets, he lifted his hand to his own cheek.

I had touched mine without noticing.

Sabine saw him do it.

Her face went through three expressions, and I did not like the one it settled on, because it looked like shame.

"Last night I asked my uncle why Aldric gasped when I struck you," she said.
