Chapter 22: Karsk Gate
The gate of Fort Karsk was shut, and the deputy stood on the wall above it with a crossbow in his hand.
I knew the spot.
Two hundred men in grey coats had stood in rows below it once and watched me argue about grain.
This time they stood on the wall and the walkway.
They looked down at us with the faces of men who had not been fed properly in weeks.
Aldric rode up to the foot of the gate on the black horse with the lean captain's riders behind him.
He had a bandage at his ribs and a bruise on his jaw the color of a plum.
He sat the saddle stiffly, because every inch of him hurt.
"Open the gate," he said.
"The Commander is dead," said the deputy.
He was a square, careful man with an officer's coat that did not quite fit.
"Word came from the capital that he fell on the north road. I hold Fort Karsk in the Marshal's name."
"The Marshal has no name left," said the lean captain. "He was relieved of his chain on the parade ground yesterday."
"I do not take orders from riders in unmarked cloaks."
