I heard her before I got the door open.
"Day three," Peyton read, in a baby voice. "Peyton Daltrey poured out three coffees and tipped her lunch into my bag."
The varsity table screamed.
"She's keeping a diary," Peyton said. "About me. It's a burn book. She's twelve."
I walked in.
Nobody noticed. They were all looking at Peyton.
"Day four. Lark Bexley, omega, locked in the ice house four hours in wet sawdust. Rhett Hagan said he would do it, on tape."
Rhett had been laughing.
He stopped.
Peyton didn't notice that either.
"The board suspended her," she read. "The board was chaired by Peyton Daltrey's father." She pressed a hand to her chest. "Oh no. I'm being written about. By a mop."
The plaid-shirt boy laughed so hard he choked on his milk.
I was halfway across the hall.
The omega table had seen me. Lark was on her feet.
"Day five," Peyton said, and stopped, and grinned. "Oh, this is the best one. Day five. Twenty omegas made a cake."
