Chapter 23: The Note

I picked the paper up off the floor.

It was stiff and brown, cut square with scissors.

I held it to my face and breathed in.

Pine. Road dust. Old meat.

The two men from the locker room.

Under them, on the folded corner, lavender shampoo and cocoa.

Lark had touched this.

"Mercy," one of the twins said. "What does it mean, queen?"

The ring had gone hot on my thumb.

Not burning. Not yet.

I called Cade, and he came down the stairs four minutes later with his boots unlaced.

He read the note twice.

His eyes went gold and stayed gold.

"I'll take the town apart," he said. "Every house. Every cellar."

"You're not the Alpha," the cook said. "Not since Friday. They'll arrest you on the first porch."

"And if whoever has her hears you coming?" I said.

He stopped.

"It says drowns," I said. "Not dies. They've got her by water. They want me to picture it."

"It says queen," the tall boy said. "Who's the queen?"

I didn't want to lie to them anymore, so I told them what I could.

"Somebody thinks I can buy her back by doing one thing," I said. "I won't do it."
