Chapter 27: The Challenge

The forty-nine got up off their knees and stepped back to the walls.

Nobody had to tell them.

Every one of them had stood in a ring like this once, on the other side of it.

Madrone Ridge stayed down a moment longer.

Then I let the aura go, and they got up too, slowly, holding the bleachers.

Peyton crawled backward off the court on her hands.

"You can't," Cade said to me, low. "Your knee."

"He knows about my knee," I said. "He was there when I tore it."

"Then don't let him have it."

I looked up at him.

"You fixed it," I said. "At the lake. Remember?"

I handed him his jacket back.

Then I shifted where I stood.

Garrick shifted at the same moment.

His wolf was lean and sandy, with a pale muzzle and pale eyes, and every part of him was quick.

I'd fought beside that wolf for four years.

I knew how he moved.

So did he, about me.

We circled the free-throw line.

He came in low and fast at my left side.

I turned it off my shoulder.
