Chapter 11: Under the Light

We stopped at the top of the porch steps, and I turned and put my back to the front door.

The lights walk had ended an hour ago.

I still had cocoa on my breath and the smell of cold pine on my coat, and Reeve's mitten in my hand.

The porch light was on.

Above us, on the doorframe, the little camera showed its steady blue dot.

"Page," Reeve said.

"Look at it."

He looked up at the lens.

"Hi, Mom," I said quietly. "Hi, Ray. This is the part where I stop hiding."

I took hold of his coat with both hands and pulled him down to me.

I kissed him slowly.

I kissed him with my mouth open under the light, and I let his hands go inside my coat, and I let myself moan.

The blue dot blinked.

It blinked again as the motion sensor reset, and again, and I did not care.

He pulled back, breathing hard.

"Your rule," he said. "Nothing on the porch."

"Mine to break."

"Page."

"Inside," I said. "Now."

He got the door open with one hand and kicked it shut behind us with his boot.

In the dark entry hall, with the hook rack at my shoulder and the cold coming off our coats, he caught me.

He pushed my back against the door.

The wood was solid against my spine.

"God," he said. "You're ridiculous."

"I know."

"You kissed me in front of my father."

"I kissed you in front of a camera," I said. "Your father's in Arizona."

He laughed into my neck, a deep shaken laugh.

Then he stopped laughing and bit me.

I gasped.

He worked his mouth down my throat, and I dropped my head back against the door.

My hands found his belt.

"Off," I said. "Coats."

He tore at the buttons on mine.

I pushed his coat down his arms and it fell in a heap, and then mine followed.

We stood in the dark in our sweaters, panting.

I was wearing a wool skirt and thick tights, because it was nine degrees.

He slid both hands up under the skirt and found the waistband of the tights.
