Chapter 11: The Travel Agent's Record
The boardroom of Rayburn Builders had a glass wall that looked out over the river.
Nine partners sat around the long table at five to nine.
Dolores was at the head, in black, with a folder in front of her.
Barrett sat at her right hand with a legal pad.
He looked rested, and he nodded to Dustin when he came in.
Joelle walked in beside Dustin.
Dolores lifted her head. "She is not a member of this board."
"She's a witness," Dustin said. "Sit, Joelle."
Joelle sat in the chair beside his, with her bag in her lap.
"I've called this meeting to order," Dolores said coldly. "The first item is my son's continued role in this company. He has cancelled his transfer to London on the eve of departure, for personal reasons. I move that his vice presidency be suspended."
"Second," said a partner.
"Before you vote," Dustin said, "I'd like to put one item on the table."
"This is not your meeting."
"It's my company. I hold forty percent of it."
Nobody argued with that.
He took a manila folder from his bag and slid a paper to the man on his left.
The paper started around the table.
"That is the confirmation record for my flight to London," he said. "One seat. Mine."
"What does it matter?" said Dolores.
"The second page is a hold placed on a second seat last Tuesday, in the name of Kendra Moss, head of procurement in our London office. The hold came from an extension in this building. The extension belongs to our general counsel."
A rustle moved down the table.
