Chapter 23: The Grave
I paid the driver and got out.
The grass was already wet.
My sneakers soaked through before I was halfway up the slope.
He didn't hear me coming, or he heard me and didn't look up.
I stopped at the foot of the grave.
My mother's name was on the left side of the stone, my dad's on the right.
Under them, one line I hadn't read since I was eight.
THEY FED EVERYBODY.
"You sold your restaurant," I said.
His head came up.
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Who told you?"
"Your sous chef. And a kid at the fry station who can't keep his mouth shut."
"He never could." He scrubbed a hand over his face. "You shouldn't be here. It's cold."
"You're sitting on the ground in a suit."
"I'm forty-two. I'm allowed."
I didn't laugh.
I sat down beside him anyway, my back against the cold granite, my shoulder an inch from his.
The coffee on the stone above us had stopped steaming.
"Is that for my dad?"
"Black, two sugars." He tipped his head back against the stone. "He drank it that way for twenty years and told everybody he took it black."
