Chapter 25: The Chamber Dinner
I typed back with one thumb.
"Then be there. Nine days. Wear a tie."
Three dots came and went.
"Will they let me in?"
"Tickets are open to the public. Buy one."
He didn't answer, and I didn't know if he'd come.
I spent the next nine days at the grill.
On Monday I sent an email to the woman planning the Chamber dinner.
I said I'd love to share a few photos during my thank-you to my uncle.
She wrote back within the hour.
"How sweet! Send them over and we'll load them in the slideshow!"
Gretchen read it over my shoulder and laughed so hard she had to sit on the cracked stool.
On the last Saturday in October, I put on the white silk dress.
It was the dress I'd walked out of the Fisk house in.
Joanne zipped me up in the room over the diner.
"You look like your mother," she said.
"Is that good?"
"She'd have done exactly this," Joanne said. "She'd have done it in heels."
The hotel ballroom downtown had thirty round tables, white cloths and candles in glass.
