Chapter 28: The Review
"You've got a truck," I said. "That's more than my dad had when he started."
He didn't smile.
He was waiting for the real answer.
So I gave it to him.
I took two fistfuls of his canvas jacket and pulled him down, right there in the middle of Fisk Auto.
In front of the seized showroom and the sale banner and a salesman who'd stopped pretending not to watch.
I kissed him in front of every person on that lot.
He made a low sound against my mouth.
His hands came up and spread across my back and lifted me onto my toes.
He kissed me back slow and deep, like a man who'd been told yes and didn't trust it yet, and then trusted it.
When I let go, his eyes were wet.
"That's a yes," I said. "In case you need it out loud."
"I needed it out loud."
"Yes. Now drive me to work. Gretchen's alone with the Monday crowd."
The review ran on the first Sunday in December.
Nobody had told us a critic was coming.
She'd come in three times in November, the paper said, and paid cash and sat at the counter.
Joanne found it first.
