Chapter 29: Kiss Cam
"Yes," I said. "Now get back on my grill."
He went back to the grill grinning.
Gretchen elbowed him in the ribs and told him he'd burned the rye toast, which he had.
On Saturday night I wore jeans, my good boots and a black and gold jersey.
I'd bought it at the arena store with my own twenty-dollar bills.
Magnus wore one too.
It was the biggest size they made, and it still pulled across his shoulders.
"You look like a mascot," I told him.
"I look like a season ticket holder."
"You've never been to a game in your life."
"I've been to eleven," he said. "I left early from every one to go cook."
Section 105 was low and loud and right behind the glass.
I'd never been this close.
When the players slammed into the boards in front of us, the glass shook and I grabbed his arm without meaning to.
He didn't let me let go.
People looked at him.
They always would.
He was six foot four with his hair tied back and his face had been on every phone in the city.
In the first intermission a man in the row behind us leaned forward and tapped his shoulder.
I felt Magnus brace.
"You're the chef," the man said. "From the TV."
"I was."
"My wife made me watch the whole thing twice." He held out his hand. "That guy with the car lot. That was something. Good for you, man."
Magnus shook it.
He didn't say anything after.
He just sat there with his big hand open on his knee until I slid mine into it.
The Penguins went up two to one in the second period.
The arena was so loud I felt it in my teeth.
Then the horn went for a TV timeout, and the music changed.
A slow, cheesy love song came over the speakers.
The big screen over center ice filled with a pink heart.
KISS CAM.
A couple in the upper deck got caught and kissed, and everybody cheered.
An old couple in matching jerseys got caught and kissed, and everybody cheered louder.
Then the camera swung, and the picture jumped, and there we were.
Twenty feet tall.
Me in my jersey with my mouth open.
