Chapter 8: The Harvest Dance
The harvest dance was held in the salon, a long adobe hall with a plank floor and strings of paper chiles on the walls.
The band had an accordion and a bajo sexto and a drummer who sang through his nose.
Seventy wolves in pressed shirts stamped and turned under the lights.
My mother danced past in Amador's arms, in a yellow dress, with her face lit up.
She caught my eye over his shoulder and mouthed: Look.
I looked.
She had never looked that happy in my whole life.
I turned away before it could soften me, and I went to find the washroom.
Charlotte Westbrook was standing at the sink.
She had her braid over one shoulder and a gold-and-turquoise clip at her temple, and she was washing her hands very slowly.
Our eyes met in the mirror.
"You came alone," she said.
"I came with my mother."
"Of course."
I ran the tap and pretended to look for a paper towel.
"I wasn't going to tell you," she said.
"What changed your mind?"
"I thought you ought to hear it from a woman who has no reason to lie," she said.
"You have every reason to lie."
"Maybe. I don't think so," she said.
She dried her hands.
"My father was at the feed store on Monday," she said. "Your stepfather was there."
"And?"
"He told my father that Cruz had agreed to stand with me at the Posadas."
The paper towel stopped halfway to my face.
"He said it himself," Charlotte said. "To his father, at the corral. He said, I'll stand at the Posadas."
"That doesn't mean he'll mate you."
"No." She tilted her head. "But he said it. You might ask him what for."
She left, and the door swung shut behind her.
I stood there with the cold water running and the band thumping through the wall.
