Chapter 11: The Cup
The Great Hall at Tempest House holds three hundred people, and at the new moon every seat was full.
I walked in through the double doors at dusk with Ambrose on my left and June on my right.
The hall went quiet from the back to the front.
Every house of the court sat in tiered rows under chandeliers, in black and silver, with their faces turned toward me.
They had all heard of the diner by then.
Somebody had put the waitress's video online, and it had traveled the court faster than any summons.
At the far end, on the raised dais, Ottoline sat in the regent's chair in grey wool and pearls.
Cressida sat on her left, with the other aunts in a row.
A little table stood in front of the dais with a silver tray on it.
On the tray was a teapot, and a cup, and a saucer.
"Linnea, child," Ottoline said, in a voice that carried to every corner. "Come and sit. I've kept your pot warm."
The hall waited.
I walked up the long aisle with my heels loud on the marble and stopped in front of the little table.
June stepped up behind my shoulder.
"It's been a long journey," Ottoline said gently. "Drink. You'll feel steadier."
I picked up the pot.
It was warm.
It smelled the way it had smelled every morning for a year, of chamomile and honey and something faintly sharp underneath that I'd always taken for lemon.
"Thank you," I said. "I've been drinking this for a year."
"You have."
"Every morning, from your hand."
"And every morning I was glad to bring it."
I poured the tea out onto the marble.
