Chapter 4: Look Me in the Eye

I opened the door as far as the chain would let me.

Ambrose stood on the porch in a black coat with frost in his hair.

He had been traveling all night, and it showed.

His face was colorless, and his eyes had gone the dark grey-green they only go when he is holding himself very still.

I had not seen him in nine months.

The bond turned over in my chest.

"May I come in?" he asked.

"No."

He nodded once.

"Then I'll say it here."

"Say it."

"The seal on those papers is a copy. My ring is in my pocket. It never left me." He took it out and showed me, a plain band of dark metal. "I didn't sign, I didn't approve, and I didn't know until my aide read me the lawyer's message."

"That doesn't change my signature."

"No," he said. "It doesn't."

I took the chain off the door and stepped out onto the porch, because I could not do this through a gap.

Cold came up through my socks.

June was somewhere behind me in the kitchen, breathing loudly.

"Here is what I want," I said. "Nine days until the new moon. Until then you stay out of my house and you don't touch me."

His jaw moved.

"And at the new moon?"

"You stand in front of the Concord and cut the bond, or you don't. I won't fight you for it. I'll keep the money, and you won't ask for it back."

"I never wanted the money back."

"Good."

"Linnea," he said. "Look at me."

I did.

It was harder than the phone had been.

He had a small scar through his left eyebrow from a fall years ago, and I had kissed it more times than I could count.

"Say it now," Ambrose said. "Say you wanted this. Say you wanted out of me, and I'll go."
