Chapter 8: Silver
Ambrose carried me out to June's car and would not let anyone else touch the door.
June drove to the Overend Landing ER with one hand on the horn.
I'd worked beside half the staff there in my summers.
A nurse I knew took one look at my face and had me on a bed right away.
"How far along?" she asked.
"Nine weeks. Triplets."
Her pen stopped.
"You're kidding."
"I'm not," I said. "Please. Is it the babies?"
The doctor on call came in, a quiet man with tired eyes who did not ask one question about the father.
He did the ultrasound himself.
I lay there with Ambrose standing at the head of the bed and June at the foot, and nobody spoke.
The screen woke.
One flicker.
Two.
Three.
"They're all there," the doctor said. "All three, all strong. I'm looking at them right now."
My whole body gave way against the pillow.
Ambrose put his hand on the rail beside my head and gripped it until the metal creaked.
"Then why did she cramp?" June asked.
"Let's find out."
He drew blood, and June took it down to the lab herself, because she knew the techs and she knew how to ask them to hurry.
She came back twenty minutes later with a printout, and her face was white.
"Linnea," she said. "How much tea do you drink?"
"Every morning. A pot."
"Who makes it?"
"Ottoline did. She brought it up herself."
"Every day?"
"For a year."
June turned the printout toward the doctor and then toward Ambrose.
"There's silver in your blood," she said. "A trace, but it's there. Not enough to hurt a human. Enough, over a year, to stop a vampire's baby from ever taking."
