Chapter 22: The Last Week
"Say yes," I said.
Lawrence looked at me.
"You haven't even read the number."
"I read it twice. Say yes."
"Mara, those hotels are ten years of my life."
"And this is your father's dock, and your daughter ties your boat to it."
He held the phone for a long moment.
Then he kissed me once, hard, and climbed down the ladder in his bare feet.
I watched him through the loft window.
He stood at the end of the dock in yesterday's trousers and made the call with his back to the harbor.
It took four minutes.
When he came back up the ladder, his face was strange.
Lighter, and older.
"It's done," he said. "The money lands Monday morning. Before noon."
"How much before noon?"
"Before noon," he said again.
That afternoon Poppy and I moved into the inn.
The owner's rooms were on the second floor at the back, over the dock.
Two bedrooms and a little kitchen and a window seat looking straight at Sea Smoke.
Hattie brought the boxes down Front Street in the wagon.
The same boxes.
POPPY. KITCHEN. WINTER.
The one marked VODKA had all of Poppy's shirts in it.
