Chapter 23: Labor Day
I wiped my hands on my apron and took the phone.
The thread was already open.
Eleanor Thayer, at the top, in plain grey letters.
I scrolled up.
It went back to June.
"Out loud," Blair said. "Or I will."
The nearest table had gone quiet.
The one behind it went quiet to see why.
Lawrence came around the steaming pots and stood beside me.
I read the first one I saw.
"July sixth. Post it tonight. Use the word trap. People love a trap."
A murmur went down the long table.
I scrolled.
"July twenty-first. Your father should withdraw. Tell him the inn will never pay. I'll take the note off his hands when he's frightened enough."
Lawrence's jaw went tight.
I scrolled again, and stopped, and my voice went out of me for a second.
Lawrence took the phone gently from my hand.
He read the next one himself.
"August twenty-ninth. The report to Augusta is written. It goes in the day after Labor Day, whatever he does."
"The child will be raised properly. The cook can visit at Christmas."
