Chapter 13: The Courtyard
Nobody moved.
The new bride's mother had her hand at her diamond earring, frozen.
The eldest son was staring at the Teacher with his mouth a little open.
She seemed to have turned into someone else in front of him.
Do-hyun didn't move at all. He was looking at the table.
Then the Teacher picked up the clay pot.
She stood, the way old women stand from the floor, one hand on her knee.
She walked up the long table in her grey hanbok, past all of them, without hurrying.
She knelt at the chairman's side and filled his cup.
"Madam is tired," she said to him, gently, in a voice for the whole room. "It's been a long morning, with the rites. Forgive her."
"Forgive me for being slow."
The chairman looked at her.
His big grey face settled into an unreadable mask.
"Thank you, Teacher," he said.
She poured for Madam Heo next. Madam Heo didn't lift her cup.
Then the Teacher bowed to the table, very correctly, and said, "I'll fetch more water," and went out through the sliding door into the courtyard.
