Chapter 22: June 24
I said yes before he finished the word vote.
That was in April.
On the morning of June 24, I stood in the elevator of the Hartwell Freight tower in the green dress, with my hair pinned back.
My fiancé beside me was visibly trying not to check his watch.
"You're nervous," I said.
"I'm punctual."
"It's the same thing at your income level."
The corner of his mouth moved.
On the twelfth floor the doors opened on the boardroom, and thirteen directors rose from their chairs.
That had never happened before.
The old white-haired director came to meet us, and he shook Stefan's hand, and then he shook mine.
"Miss Kaufman," he said. "We hoped you would attend."
"I wasn't going to miss it."
Winifred was already seated at the head of the table.
She wore gray, with no pearls.
Her hair was perfect, as always, and she kept her eyes on the glass in front of her.
Behind her, Alistair Crane's chair stood empty.
He had been charged with forgery in May by the state's attorney, and the bar had struck his license the following week.
The lawyer who had replaced him sat beside Winifred, and I noticed he did not look at her once.
