Chapter 21: Words That Ring

They carried him up to his own rooms, and he didn't wake all night.

In the morning the physician let me in.

The room was hot as a bread oven. They had fires in both grates and furs piled on the bed.

Florian lay under them, gray, with frost white on his lips and his eyelashes.

The King sat by the window. He'd been there all night. He didn't get up.

Cassian waited in the doorway. He had to duck under the lintel even to stand in it.

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

Florian's eyes opened. It took him a while to find me.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would."

His hand moved on the fur. I took it. It was colder than yesterday.

I'd thought about it all night, lying awake at the inn.

I'd thought about how he'd knelt on the ballroom floor and said every word of it out loud.

I'd thought that was enough. That it had to be.

"Florian," I said. "I forgive you."

I watched his face.

Then I looked at Cassian in the doorway.

He didn't want to say it. I could see that.

"It rang," he said gently. "I'm sorry, Clem. Soft. But it rang."

Florian shut his eyes.

The frost on his lip didn't change.
