Chapter 14: The Confession
I stepped out onto the stone step and pulled the door shut behind me, so Roisin could keep sleeping.
The rain came down between us in thin grey lines.
"You said Saturday," I said. "It's Saturday."
"I know."
"Then say it. Not the sad version. What you did, in order."
His throat moved.
"I'm going to," he said. "But not here, with you standing in the cold in that dress."
"That's a very convenient delay."
"It isn't a delay."
"It's the third one."
He took that without flinching.
"The chat," I said. "I've read all of it. The ring boy sent it."
Something crossed his face, shame and relief together.
"Then you saw October twentieth."
"I saw that you quit weeks before the Formal."
"And I kept it from you anyway." He said it flatly, like a man reading his own charge sheet. "That's the problem."
"I'm not forgiving you this morning."
"I'm not asking you to."
"What are you asking?"
"To watch Monday." His voice was low and steady.
"I'm going to tell the school what I did. All of it, before anyone else gets to."
