Chapter 20: The Dock
Sheridan's text came at four.
Dock. Five. Alone.
I showed it to Jude, and he said, "No."
I showed it to Roisin, and she said, "Absolutely not."
I put my phone on record, tucked it into my coat pocket, and went.
The lake had frozen at the edges, and the dock stuck out over black water.
Sheridan stood at the far end in the grey coat, hands in her pockets, her breath making little clouds.
The sun was going down behind the boathouse and turning the ice orange.
She didn't turn when I came up behind her.
"You brought a lawyer?" she asked.
"I brought a phone."
"Of course you did."
She almost laughed.
"My father taught me to hold money," she said. "Not to spend it."
"He said a woman who holds the money holds the room."
"That's why you offered to keep the pot."
"I didn't offer. He told me to. He said it would keep Brooks loyal and give me something on four boys."
She looked at the ice.
"He was right about that, you know. They all signed."
