Chapter 21: The Board
The great hall had a ceiling and a long table at the front for the board.
By ten there were eight of them in their chairs, and somewhere past two hundred students standing along the walls.
Hollis bylaws allow any student under review to ask for an open session.
Jude had asked.
So had I.
The chair sat in the center seat in his navy suit, with a gavel at his elbow and his daughter's empty chair beside him.
The headmaster sat at his right.
The knitting woman sat at the far end, with her needles in her lap and her eyes on me.
"We will begin with the matter of Jude Rafferty," the chair said.
Jude stood at the lectern in front of the table.
He said it all again, in fewer words, and he didn't ask for mercy.
"I move that the student be expelled," the chair said, "effective today."
"Second," said a man in a camel coat.
My heart stopped.
"Before the vote," I said, standing up in the second row, "I'd like to be heard on the chair's conflict."
"Miss Whittredge is out of order."
"Miss Whittredge has a motion pending against her signed by you," said the knitting woman. "Let her speak."
