Chapter 6: What She Wore
Roxy found me on the terrace twenty minutes later, after the duck and before the speeches.
I had gone out for air because Preston Chalfant had sat down at Gerald's table and talked to me for ten minutes.
He asked about my "system."
He said Chalfant Capital would love to hear it.
I said I'd think about it, and I wanted to break his teeth.
The terrace looked over the eighteenth green, which was dark and silver under the moon.
The cold air smelled like cut grass and cigars.
Roxy closed the glass door behind her and stood with her back against it.
"You look different," she said.
"I have a suit."
"It's not the suit."
She looked thinner in the face after eight days, and tired in a way makeup could not fix.
Her freckles stood out on skin that was too pale.
She held a small silver clutch in both hands.
"Don't," I said.
"Don't what?"
"Don't look at me like I'm the one who left."
"You left."
"You handed me the ring."
She flinched.
I felt something ugly and satisfying go through me at the sight of it.
"I'm glad you're doing well," she said. Her voice was thin and careful. "I heard about Veronica Taliaferro. I heard you're getting rich."
"You heard from your father?"
"I heard from everyone." She swallowed. "I didn't want things to end that way."
"Then why did they?"
She said nothing.
The wind moved her hair, and I looked at her mouth and hated that I still knew how it tasted.
"I asked you a question on that lawn," I said. "In front of a hundred and twenty people. I knelt on wet grass and you gave me back a ring. You didn't say no. You didn't say yes. You said go."
