Chapter 14: No Rules Tonight
I took him home to my apartment that night.
It was the first time he had been inside it.
Three flights of stairs, a rattling radiator, a couch with a quilt over the arm.
He stood in the doorway and looked at everything, my mugs and my plants and the stack of unread mail.
"Nobody's in a hurry," I said. "No clinic. No rules. No toy."
"Where is it?"
"In a shoebox in the closet. I haven't opened that closet in a week."
He nodded slowly.
"Good," he said. "I don't want it to be what you reach for."
"I'm not reaching for it. I'm reaching for you."
I took his hand and led him to my bed.
I had thought about this room for six months, with him in it.
I had pictured it fast and hungry.
Instead we sat on the edge of the mattress, and I took off his watch, and then his shirt, one button at a time, and he let me.
"Before this goes any further," Ezra said, "I have something to say."
"Say it."
"It's the part I haven't said."
His thumb moved along the back of my hand.
"You were with Preston for a year. You let a man who called you broken into your bed. I heard about him from Judd, in Boston, and wondered whether he was good to you."
"Ezra."
"You never called me."
"I texted you once," I said quietly. "You never answered."
"Once."
"Once was all I had left. Judd had just told me what you said."
He closed his eyes.
"Then we both quit," he said. "Five years. We both quit after one try."
