Chapter 27: Eight O'Clock
The boardroom on the fifty-second floor had a window the length of the building and a table that seated twenty.
At eight o'clock exactly, Desmond sat at its head.
On his right sat a tanned man in a navy blazer with two lawyers, a briefcase, and a gold pen laid parallel to a folder.
On his left lay a stack of documents with colored tabs.
The Chairman had told the building's security chief at six that morning exactly who had the right to come up.
So when the elevator opened at the stroke of the hour, nobody stopped us.
Hester walked in first.
She wore her black silk and her pearls and carried the duck-headed cane.
Behind her came the Chairman and the managing partner in her green dress.
Then came Garret, in the suit he'd worn to the hearing, with his scarred hand open at his side.
I came last, in the emerald gown.
Hester had left it pressed in a garment bag at the tower's front desk, with a note that said Armor.
