Chapter 16: Walk Me Home

Tara's POV

I was at my desk at seven on Friday, with no sleep and a cup of the terrible office tea.

Declan came out of his office at ten past, carrying a single printed page, and walked straight to me.

He did not say good morning.

"Read it," he said. "I forwarded it last night. I should have knocked on your door and handed it to you."

I read it.

Beller Wireless would end its tower-audit contract with Brightline at the end of the month.

Beller Wireless would stay if Brightline removed a certain employee, who had a personal conflict, a pending criminal matter and a record of hostility.

It was signed by a man in a good suit I had never met, and I could hear Colin in every line.

"He's not coming to Myria yet," I said. "He's sending a lawyer first."

"He's sending a lawyer because he can't use his hands."

"What does the regional director say?"

"He called at six." Declan's jaw was tight. "He wants you on paid leave until the review, and he wants me to sign it."

"And you'll say?"

"No."

"He'll put you on leave too."

"Probably."

I stood up.

"Don't," Declan said. "Sit. I'm handling it."

I looked at him for a moment.

Then I said, in a voice I kept quiet because the floor was filling up with people and coffee, "No one walks home alone. That's the rule. You made it for the whole building."
