Chapter 19: Nobody's Daughter

Dani sat on a bench at arrivals with a duffel bag between her feet and a pillowcase on her lap.

Declan had driven us out in silence, and he stopped at the edge of the hall.

"I'll be at the coffee cart," he said. "Wave if you want me."

"Thank you."

"Ask me first, Tara. It goes both ways."

I almost smiled, and then I saw my sister.

Her black curls had been pulled flat into a rubber band.

Her jeans hung off her hip bones, and her wrists were very thin.

She stood up when she saw me, and she did not run to me or cry.

"Nor," she said.

"Why are you here, Dani?"

"I'm not here to ask you for anything." She held out the pillowcase with both hands. "Mom's tablet is in there. It's still logged into the camera account. I took it off the kitchen counter the morning after the party."

I took it.

It was heavier than a pillowcase should be.

"That's the whole afternoon from the pantry," Dani said. "Not the clip her lawyer sent you. Everything before the swap, and everything after."

"Why would you give me this?"

She looked at the floor.

"You said sorry to me," she said. "At the party. You said I wasn't yours, and you were sorry I never was. Nobody has ever said sorry to me about anything."

"I said it because it was true."

"I know. It's the nicest true thing anyone has said to me."

A woman rolling a suitcase went around us.

Dani swayed a little, and put her hand on the bench back.

"When did you last eat?" I said.

"Saturday. A bite of the cake, before."

"Dani."

"Let me say it first. Please. I flew nine hours rehearsing it."
