Chapter 18: She's Out
The ditch froze the night after Bom left.
Gyu-ho went out at dusk to open it with his heel, and his boot rang on it.
The water in the cut had gone to gray ice from the stream bend to the rows.
He planted the tomatoes anyway, because the light was going and the seed was already in his hand.
At dawn the vines stood only to his chest, and the fruit was small and pale at the shoulders.
[Tower tomato. Quality: Common.]
[Growth: dusk to dawn. Keeps: 3 days.]
[Eaten: restores the eater's stamina in full, within an hour.]
He stood in the row and looked at it.
A whole grade gone, because he had planted dry.
Every quality he had climbed since October started with stream water at planting, and the ditch was a sheet of ice.
So the next dusk he broke the stream's edge with his slab and carried water up in the iron pot.
It took eleven trips for one row, and his hands were dead white by the last.
The row came up Good again, and he carried the pot every evening after that.
The fuel was the next problem.
There was no wood on this floor except the persimmon tree, and he would have frozen before he cut it.
So he burned stalks.
Every plant he had grown since October hung drying along the eaves, and the stove ate them a fistful at a time.
The Prime rows ate the ash after that, so every stalk he burned for warmth was also a root he could sell.
He checked the bundles every morning, and they went down faster than the ash went up.
Grandpa would have called that a closed farm, and worried about the spring.
On New Year's morning he woke on Day 73 and lay listening under the Busan blanket.
There was no sound at all, not a bird, not a car on the county road, not Grandma's radio.
