Chapter 24: What Velde Owes

The cart turned out of the yard into the street, and the finders closed in around it, and I couldn't see her anymore.

I stood there until the sound of the wheels was gone.

Gerd stood beside me.

"Well?" he said at last. "You always think of something."

"I'm thinking."

"Think faster."

We rode north that afternoon.

On the second evening we camped by the river, and Gerd built a fire, badly, as he did everything in a kitchen.

I watched him poke at it for a while.

"Gerd," I said. "You put your hand on the book and told them he was dead at midnight."

"Aye."

"He was."

Gerd stopped poking the fire.

"I drowned in a mine in another country," I said. "A long way from here."

"I woke up on that table at noon with his body and none of his life."

"Anke's knife killed him. She knows. The healer in the salt village knows. Now you do."

Gerd sat very still for a long time.

"I closed his eyes," he said finally. "I knew it was him I closed them on. And I knew it wasn't him who opened them."
