Chapter 27: Father

"No, Your Majesty," I said. "I'm not."

He nodded slowly.

He held up Gerd's letter.

"Gerd Holler has written to me every month for three years," he said. "He has never told me a lie."

"He says my son died at his desk in Velde on the twenty-seventh of August, of a knife under the ribs."

"He says the man who got up off the bier the next day is a stranger who drowned in a mine somewhere he can't pronounce."

"He says that stranger is the best man he has served since my wife."

He put the letter down on the windowsill very carefully.

"Is any of it wrong?"

"No."

"Then tell me the rest. Everything Gerd didn't know."

So I told him.

I didn't tell him about my first life, except that I'd had one and lost it.

I told him what his son had done in Velde.

He didn't know any of it.

Gerd had written him two and a half years of drink and witches bought and never seen again, because that was what Gerd saw.

I told him that his son had carried a girl who was never cold over the ice on his back, and given her his boots.
