Chapter 28: The Eighteen

The throne hall of Kronhal was long enough to hold a market in.

By the third bell on Midsummer Eve, it was full to the walls.

The court stood down both sides in silk and fur, with half the city packed in behind them.

The king sat on a high black chair at the far end, under the green copper dome.

Mechthild Sturm stood in the open floor in front of the throne in her black gown and velvet cap, with her book.

Behind her stood the chapter heads of the Finders, the captains of every province in Aldmark, twelve old men in black with iron collars.

Volker Kranz stood at the end of their row.

He had my mother's ruby on his little finger, and he turned it when he saw me.

"Majesty," Mechthild said, in her soft voice that somehow reached every corner.

"I bring a charge against the Lord of Velde. Not witchcraft. Your court at Hessa has spoken on that."

"I charge him with firing the crown's own weapon on the crown's own Finders, on the river at Velde, in December."

"Captain Kranz will swear to it."

Kranz stepped forward and swore to it, at length.

He told it as if he had stood his ground.

"I charge him also with hiding witches," Mechthild went on.

"A widow who opens stone. A girl who makes fields come up overnight. A girl who sees through rock to silver."
