Chapter 29: Midsummer
The great square of Kronhal could have held all of Velde ten times over.
By noon on Midsummer Day there was no room in it to drop a glove.
People stood on the roofs and hung out of every window, and boys sat on the shoulders of the bronze kings around the fountain.
Along the east side of the square stood the scaffold.
It was a long platform of new timber, as high as a man's chest, with a row of posts down its whole length.
Under every post, firewood was stacked to the knee.
There were a hundred and twenty-four posts.
I stared at them with my fists clenched, because I couldn't do anything else with my hands.
The king's dais stood across the square, hung with green and gold.
He sat on it in a crown, with the court on benches below him.
He didn't look at me.
I stood at the foot of the scaffold with Gerd beside me, close enough to touch the wood.
The finders had tried to move us back.
Gerd had told them the Lord of Velde was the king's son, and they could move him themselves.
