Chapter 35: The Chain
"Then I'll come back at first frost," I told her, "without one."
The Eldest smiled for the first time.
Gerd was waiting for us at the Hollow Cross two days later with the cart, a pot of his terrible soup and a letter.
He held the letter out before I'd got down off the last rock.
"From Hessa," he said. "Came up the valley road the morning you left."
"The river lords have hung a chain across the river."
"Twelve of our barges are tied up above it with the silver on board, and they won't let one through."
The chain was the first thing I saw when we came down to Hessa three weeks later.
It hung across the river between two squat stone towers, one on each bank.
Every link was as long as my forearm, and it sagged into the brown water in the middle like a hammock.
Above it, twelve Velde barges sat against the bank in a row, loaded to the gunwales with bars of silver under tarpaulins.
The bars had come down from the mine to our landing on the new horse rails in an afternoon.
