Chapter 62: The First Train

"Anke," I said. "It's a mountain."

"I know what it is." She didn't look round. "I've walked it."

"The barge was a river. This is four hours of climbing, all the way up to the Hollow Cross and through the gallery."

"Then you'd better get everyone on board," she said. "Before I change my mind."

The smith stared at her, and then at me.

"She'll have no coal behind her," he said. "If she tires halfway, there's nothing to keep the pressure up."

"Then I won't tire," Anke said.

It was something that didn't kill anybody.

It was a squat black boiler on six iron wheels, with a tall chimney and a footplate at the back.

The firebox door stood at the height of a sitting woman's shoulders.

Behind it stood four wagons with benches in them and roofs over the benches, coupled with Velde's gun.

The Master of the Mint stood beside the first wagon in his fur collar, in June.
