Chapter 12: Morning

Caspian opened his eyes, and looked at the paper in her hand.

The greenhouse was very quiet.

A drop fell from a leaf onto the stone floor.

Mio did not breathe.

She waited for him to say her name in the Commander's voice, the flat one, the one from the council chamber.

He did not.

He sat up slowly, took the sheet gently out of her fingers, and folded it along its creases.

He put it back inside his coat.

"Not here," Caspian said. "Not yet."

"Caspian-"

"I know what it looks like."

His voice was low and steady, and his grey eyes held hers.

"Come to bed. Please. Let me hold you for one hour before the day takes us."

She should have asked.

She wanted to ask so badly that her chest hurt.

But the sun was coming up behind the lemon trees, and he had said please, and she was a coward.

She nodded.

He lifted her in his coat and carried her through the cold dawn garden.

He took her up the back stairs, past the guards, who looked at the wall.

His room was warm.

The fire had been laid fresh, and the black bed was turned down, and the tall window was full of morning.

He set her on the edge of the mattress and knelt, and took off her shoes.

Then her stockings, one by one, with his thumbs.

Then he took off his own clothes and got in beside her.
