Chapter 23: The Seal Goes Back
By midnight the lanterns had burned down and the mountain was quiet.
The Seven Peaks had gone to the guest courtyards.
The forty riders at the ford had been taken without a fight by thirty Salt Tide men lying in the reeds.
The Pavilion's envoy sat bound in the lower courtyard, with a lantern in his face and a great deal to say.
Zhaoxue did not want to hear any of it.
She wanted to sit down.
She found a seat on the top step of the Pine Hall, where she had died.
The stone was cold under her and the sky was full of tiny drifting lights.
Linxia came and sat beside her.
They did not talk for a while.
At the far end of the courtyard, the two old men stood by the formation stone.
Their heads were together, and they were arguing in low voices about a spring.
"It is not mine," Mo Zhenhai said, loud enough to carry.
"It is yours, you stubborn goat. It's been your quarrel for ten years."
"I only wanted you to ask me for something."
"Then I ask you. Share it."
"Fine!"
"Fine!"
They shook hands so hard that both of them winced.
Linxia put her head back against the pillar and laughed.
"They've been waiting ten years to do that," she said.
"Ten years of toll disputes."
"Ten years of letters about a ford. My father cried when yours wrote him a rude one."
Zhaoxue turned the Seal over in her fingers.
She had worn it under her robe all night.
It lay warm in her palm, a green pine branch carved by a stranger a hundred years ago.
It hung from a cord that had been her father's.
She looked at it for a while.
Then she held it out.
"Take it back," she said.
Linxia did not move.
"It's yours. I gave it to you because I was afraid, and I thought you were the knife. You're not. You never were. It isn't a thing a person should hand over to buy their life."
