Chapter 10: Thirty Days to Leave
On Saturday at 1:20, I walked into my own open house.
I wore a gray robe over my clothes and the silk scarf over the patch on my head, and Simon came in behind me carrying a leather folder.
The foyer was full.
Two couples were touring the staircase. A woman in a blazer and a name tag was handing out glossy sheets. Three of my neighbors stood by the window with plastic cups of lemonade.
Delaney stood at the center of the room in a white dress and her own pearl studs, pouring water for a buyer.
She looked like she belonged.
Gilbert saw me from across the room, and his whole face lit.
"Abigail! You came. I was worried you'd miss it." He raised his voice for the crowd. "Everyone, this is my wife. She's been in the hospital, so please be gentle."
A few people clapped softly.
I walked past him and held out my hand to the woman in the blazer.
"You're the listing agent?"
"I am." She smiled professionally. "And you are?"
"Abigail Otis Farwell. The owner."
Her smile slipped.
"I'm sorry. Mr. Farwell is listed as the owner."
"Of course he is," I said.
Simon opened the folder and handed her a stapled document with a raised county seal.
"Certified copy of the deed," he said. "Recorded nine years ago. Sole owner, Abigail Otis Farwell."
The agent read it.
Her face went from pleasant to pale.
"Mr. Farwell," she said, slowly. "You told me this property was held jointly."
"It is," Gilbert said quickly. "There's a clerical mix-up. My wife is not herself right now. She had brain surgery three days ago."
