Chapter 20: Until the Divorce Was Final
The office was empty by four, and Simon was waiting at the end of the hall with his jacket off.
I walked toward him slowly in the green dress I had worn to the gala.
He watched every step.
"Cora?" he asked.
"At a friend's, until Sunday. She packed the bag herself and told me not to wait up." I stopped an inch from him. "Her words."
"I like her more every week."
"The decree was stamped yesterday."
"I heard."
"Then you said something, once, in my kitchen."
He did not pretend to forget.
"Not until the divorce is final," he said.
"Is it final?"
"It is."
"You said until the divorce was final, Simon." I put my hand flat on his chest and felt his heart going. "I've been very patient. I have a scar and a recorded decree. Is this legal enough for you?"
He laughed, low and unsteady.
"It's very legal."
"Then stop talking."
He reached past me and lifted the knob of my old office door.
It stuck, and he lifted harder, and it gave.
The brass plate on it said A. OTIS.
He shut the door behind us and leaned me back against it, and I felt the cool metal through my dress and the heat of him all down my front.
"Abby," he said.
"Say it."
"I have wanted to put my mouth on yours for seventeen years."
"Then do it."
He kissed me hungrily.
It was nothing like the careful kiss in my kitchen.
His hand gripped my hip, and the other went into my hair.
I opened my mouth to him and pulled him in by the belt.
He groaned against my lips.
