Chapter 5: The Note I Signed

On Tuesday morning, Delaney came down to breakfast in my mother's pearls.

She wore them over a cream sweater, and she touched them once as she sat down.

Gilbert was reading his phone. Cora was buttering toast with her tongue between her teeth.

Nobody at the table looked at me.

I set down my coffee.

"Delaney, I need those back."

The knife stopped in Cora's hand.

"Excuse me?" Gilbert said.

"The pearls. They were my mother's. I didn't lend them."

"Abigail." He put the phone down and used his reasonable voice. "I told her she could borrow them. It's a necklace."

"Then you won't mind that it's mine."

"Oh my God," Cora said. "Are you serious? Over jewelry?"

"Over my mother."

Cora shoved her chair back. "You're being pathetic. Dad said she could wear them!"

"Your father doesn't own them, and he never did."

I held out my hand.

For one second, Delaney did not move.

Then she reached behind her neck and undid the clasp.

She laid the pearls across my palm, still warm.

"I'm so sorry," she said softly. "I didn't realize how much they meant. That was thoughtless of me."

She sounded so ashamed that Cora threw her arms around her.

"You don't have to apologize to her!"

Delaney patted Cora's back and looked at me over her shoulder.

It was a long, steady look, and it had no apology in it.

Then it was gone, and she was smiling again.

I closed my fingers around the pearls and said nothing else.

"This is exactly what I'm talking about," Cora said, her voice rising. "Everything is a fight with her. I can't live like this. I'm moving to Delaney's lake house."
