Chapter 7: Where the Money Came From

"Your father is the one who would know about that," I said.

Cora's head turned back.

"What does that mean?"

"Ask him about the lipstick on his collar. Then ask him why he told his daughter a lie from a hospital hallway."

She stared at me.

For the first time since I'd woken up in this life, she had nothing ready.

The nurse came in with breakfast on a tray, gluten free and labeled, and I stood and let her work.

I left before Cora decided what to say.

On Saturday night, the hospital foundation held its charity dinner at the country club.

My name was on the invitation list because my family had given to it for forty years.

Gilbert had never once looked at that list.

I walked in wearing a green dress and my mother's pearls.

Heads turned across the ballroom.

A woman I barely knew caught my arm. "Abigail? You look incredible. What have you done?"

"I slept," I said.

Simon was at a table near the stage with two other partners. He lifted his glass an inch and did not come over.

I understood. He was leaving the room to me.

Gilbert was at the center table.

He wore his best tuxedo, and Delaney sat beside him in a silver gown, looking elegant and perfectly at home.

When he saw me, he stood halfway out of his seat.

"Abigail. I didn't know you were coming."

"My invitation came in my name."

"I brought Delaney as our consultant," he said, fast. "She's been helping the firm. You've met."

"Several times," I said. "She's living in my house."
