Chapter 12: The Only One Who Told Me
He stood up.
I had not seen him on his feet before, and he was taller than I had thought, and broad through the shoulders.
He was still holding my wrist.
He walked me backward across the room, not fast and not rough, until my shoulders touched the door.
Then he planted his free hand on the wood beside my head and leaned down.
"Say which one you are," he said.
His breath was warm on my cheek.
I could smell smoke on him, and old iron, and something under it that made my knees go loose.
"I'm Neve Fenwick," I said.
"The Healer is Sorrel Fenwick."
"She's my sister. My twin."
His hand went still on the door.
"The decree," he said.
"Says I'll hang if I set foot in Hollowcrest. I know. I read it."
"I signed that decree."
"I know that, too."
His eyes held mine for a long moment, pale and furious and very tired.
"The Lord Councilor told me twins carry knives," he said. "That a twin is a lie wearing a face. He had good reason to tell me so, and I believed him."
"I've no knife."
"No." He looked at my empty hands. "You have a wolf strong enough to pull silver out of a king with two fingers, which is worse."
I swallowed.
"You felt that."
"I have not had a steady hand in two years."
He lifted his right hand from the door and held it between us.
It did not shake.
He stared at it.
"Nine days of her touch, and I was worse every morning," he said slowly. "A few moments of yours, and this."
"That's what I came to tell you," I said. "The Healer isn't curing you."
