Chapter 20: Two Faces, One King
Rurik's POV
On the morning of the Convocation, nine days after the bell rang in the Healers' Tower, I dressed myself.
For nine days she had slept under my captain's key, and for nine days the Steward had waited to say what he heard Sorrel confess.
I had not dressed myself since I was a boy, and my hands were steady, and I stood for a time in front of the mirror and looked at a man I did not entirely know.
He was no longer grey.
Behind me, the wall slid open on my father's stair.
She came through it in Sorrel's long grey cloak, her braid pinned up and her chin lifted, with Hester limping behind her.
"You have the knife," she said.
"I have the knife."
"And your hand?"
I held it out.
It was steady, and she took it between both of hers.
"No touching," she said.
"I wrote that rule for a fool."
"You did."
I kissed her knuckles, and she shut her eyes.
I could have stayed in that room until the sun went down.
"Whatever happens in that hall," I said, "I will not call the guard."
"I know."
"I want you to hear me say it. I will not."
"I know, Rurik."
Hester coughed.
"We are late," she said.
The Convocation hall of Hollowcrest is a long room of black stone, with forty seats on either side of a central aisle and a stone dais at the far end.
I had walked up that aisle alone every year for three years.
This morning, I walked it with her on my arm.
The Councilors rose as I entered, a wall of grey cloaks.
