Chapter 12: The Order

Clara did not scream, and she did not run.

She walked back along the fence to her car with her hands in her coat pockets.

She drove to Roland Park with both hands on the wheel, and she did not remember a single light on the way.

She sat down in the study, in his chair, behind his desk, and waited.

At noon the front door opened, and the cane tapped across the hall.

Alexander came in with his coat over his arm and stopped at the sight of her.

"Clara. You're pale."

"Sit down."

He sat in the chair across the desk.

"I was at Curtis Bay at seven this morning," she said. "Those are your men."

His face did not change, but his hand closed on the head of the cane.

"I knew the tall one on sight, Alexander. And I think you know how."

The clock on the mantel ticked.

"Tell me what you did, Alexander. And don't say rule three."

He looked at her for a long time.

When he spoke, his voice was quiet and flat, the voice of a man reading something from a very old page.

"In the first life, Chase Loomis owed me six million dollars," he said. "He told me his wife held the Althaus land, and that if she signed it over, I'd be paid. I told my foreman to send three men to frighten her into signing."

Clara said nothing.

"I told them, don't mark her face. I told them, a warning, nothing more." His jaw moved. "They found you in an alley behind the Carrow Street garage at ten at night. They did not stop."
