Chapter 13: Bay Ridge General

Dominic caught her before her head hit the tile.

He lifted my sister in his arms, and her head rolled against his shoulder.

"Fiona," he said. "The bag."

"I have it."

I was holding the plastic bag with the cup and the teapot in my fist. I did not remember picking it up again.

Benny held the apartment door open.

We took the stairs down, because none of us trusted that service elevator.

I looked back once from the doorway.

Nino lay face-down on the leather couch with his mouth open, snoring, one hand on the empty scotch bottle.

"Leave him," I said.

Dominic laid Roisin across the back seat with her head in my lap.

Her skin was cold and damp, and her lips had gone the color of paper.

"Where?" Benny said. "The Brancato clinic is twelve minutes."

"No."

"Boss?"

"Bay Ridge General," I said. "My father's local has paid into that hospital for thirty years. No Brancato owns a nurse there."

Benny put the car in gear and said nothing, which was how I knew he was frightened.

Roisin's eyes opened once on the Gowanus.

"Is it gone?" she whispered.

"I don't know yet."

"Don't let her give me the tea."

"Nobody is giving you anything."

She closed her eyes again, and her fingers found the hem of my sleeve and held on.

The night nurse at the emergency desk saw the blood on my sister's nightgown and had a gurney there in under a minute.

They wheeled her behind a curtain.

A woman in her fifties with a grey braid and a pen behind her ear came in after her.

"How many weeks?" she asked me.

"I don't know. Nine, ten. She found out three weeks ago."

"Any history of bleeding?"

"None. She's been drinking a tea every day since she found out. A blend. Someone else made it."

The doctor stopped writing.

"What kind of blend?"

I held up the plastic bag.

"I need this tested. The cup, the pot, what's left in them. And I need her blood tested for the same thing."
