Chapter 5: Fort Lee
The Fort Lee house sat on a cliff above the Hudson, with the whole city lit up across the water.
It was smaller than I expected, grey stone and wide windows, with one lamp burning in the hall.
Benny carried my two bags to the door, put the teapot box on the porch like a bomb, and said, "Goodnight, boss. Goodnight, Mrs. F. I'm sleeping in the garage apartment and I'm wearing earplugs."
He ran.
Dominic watched him go, and something in his face almost cracked into a laugh.
"He's been waiting six years for me to marry anyone," he said.
"Does he approve?"
"He cried in the car on the way to the church."
I laughed, and the sound surprised me.
Dominic looked at me.
He took my coat, hung it up, and stood in the hall with his hands at his sides, not touching me.
"The bedroom is at the top of the stairs," he said. "Mine. If you meant what you said."
"I meant it."
"Fiona."
"I've spent nine years being the wife who did everything right," I said. "I'm not doing it tonight. I want to know what it's like to want someone and have him want me back."
His breath went out of him.
"I do," he said, and his voice had gone rough. "I have since the table."
I took his hand and led him up the stairs.
His bedroom was dark and plain, with a wide bed and a window that looked out over the river.
I turned to him in the dark and put my hands flat on his chest.
His heart was pounding under my palms.
I undid the first button of his shirt, then the next, and he let me.
He stood there with his arms at his sides while I opened his shirt to the waist.
He was solid and warm, with a dark line of hair running down his stomach.
I put my mouth against the hollow of his throat.
He made a low sound, and his hands finally came up and fisted in the back of my green dress.
