Chapter 14: Fever

Rhett got out of the truck slowly, so everyone on the quad could watch him do it.

"Morning, babe," he said. "Nice bag. Fairmont purple. Does it itch?"

"Don't call me that," Erin said.

Her voice was level, and her hands were not.

"You blocked me. You blocked my mother's number too, that's real mature." He took a step toward her. "I'm here to take you home."

"I am home," she said. "This is the school I picked."

"Picked." He laughed. "Hartigan, you couldn't pick a lunch."

I moved to put myself between them, and he put a palm flat on my chest.

"Stay out of it, Reeves."

"You're in a fire lane," I said.

"So write me a ticket."

Gabe had already stepped off the curb with his phone to his ear.

"Hi, yes," he said, loudly and clearly. "This is Gabriel Hosmer at Harlan Hall. There's a man harassing a student in front of the building. Black pickup. He put his hands on my roommate."

Rhett looked at him and did not seem to know what to say.

Two campus officers in orange vests were already crossing the grass.

They were both bigger than Rhett.

"Problem here?" the older one asked.

"No problem." Rhett lifted his hands. "Visiting my girlfriend."

"I'm not his girlfriend," Erin said.

She said it to the officer, and then she said it again to Rhett's face.

"I'm not your girlfriend. I haven't been since the hospital. You owe me three thousand one hundred dollars, and I'm going to get it."
